How To Draw a Cartoon Snowman
It doesn't have to be Christmas to enjoy learning how to draw a cartoon snowman. Create your snowman illustration easily with pencil and pen. Add a dash of colour and watch it spring to life! This drawing idea is suitable for children aged 4 and above. Follow Quickdraw on YouTube for more festive art ideas.
Art materials needed:
A plain sketchpad to draw on, a sharp pencil to draw with, an eraser to rub out messy lines, a black marker pen to go over pencil lines, and a bunch of colouring pencils or felt tip pens to add a splash of colour!
Step 1: Drawing with pencil
-
Where to begin. Every snowman drawing, since the dawn of time, has begun with a giant snowball. So we will mark out a round circle like this for our first of three snowballs.
-
This second circle will be the lower part of our snowman's body. Try to draw a slightly larger shape than the first. Two down, one more snowball to go.
-
Congratulations! We are making headway with our cartoon snowman illustration. Spaking of heads, this third and final circle is going to be our snowman's round head o which we will draw a friendly face.
-
Let's make our snowman drawing come alive. Firstly, a set of three small circles as coal for it's belly - right down the middle. And then, a curly scarf for some warmth. Next we can add a pair of arms which is actually two thin tree branches.
-
Looking cool, Mr Snowman! Where did you get that dapper hat from? The hat can be drawn in two parts: a flat circle for the rim and a cylinder for the top. We also have two coals for eyes, a carrot nose and a long, cheerful smile.
Step 2: Drawing with pen
-
Fetch your black marker pen and trace over the pencil lines so the snowman stands out nicely on the plain white sketchpad. We only need to go over the outside lines, so we can leave out some of the lines that join up on those snowballs you drew earlier.
Step 3: Colouring in
-
Now you may be thinking: how on earth do you colou in a white snowman? Well, here's the trick... a snowman's scarf, hat, arms and buttons will always need a dash of colour. Choose which shades you want to use. And for our snowman's body, we can gently apply a blue shadow down one side, because this gives the effect of glowing ice!
We are done here... great job!
